Prospect Park School is a place that promotes responsibility, respect, civility and academic excellence in a safe learning and teaching environment. We depend on the aid of parents/legal guardians to assist in enforcing the standards of student conduct and attendance. As part of the school program, we attempt to teach good citizenship which is based upon an awareness of, and respect for, the rights of others. In the process of becoming good citizens, students are expected to learn the importance of following rules and regulations that have been adopted for the benefit of all. This Code of Behavior applies to students, parents, guardians, staff, volunteers and any individual involved in our school system. It applies at school and at school-related activities or events off or on school property.
Effective behavior codes provide children with opportunities to learn from their mistakes and to develop self-discipline. A personalized approach when dealing with children allows one to more effectively take into consideration each child's uniqueness; therefore, flexibility is an important code characteristic that allows a range of responses to misbehavior.
The absence of consequences may deny children learning opportunities that are necessary for a smooth transition to responsible adulthood. The positive reinforcement of desirable behaviors will boost self-esteem and confidence and add desired balance to a child's school experience. Included within the range of consequences are such behavior control strategies such as:
- a warning or reprimand
- a written statement of apology
- elimination of certain school privileges
- referral to the vice principal's/principal's office
- parent conference
- after-school detention
- in-school suspension
- out-of-school suspension
Specific consequences, discipline and remedial action will vary, based on the age/grade level of the students involved, the level of credible documentation of the incident, the severity of the incident, and any previous record of similar incidents. The administration reserves the right to make decisions based on the merits of the case.
